Born in 1948, Danny Helms is an Arkansas native artist and sometimes poet currently living in Texarkana, Arkansas. He was always fascinated by drawing and had virtually no early art education. Helms was self-taught until college. He graduated from Arkansas State University with a major in Fine Art. Helms ventured into self-expression paintings in the 1980s. Life and career eventually led him into the printing industry, exposing Helms to commercial art and design. In 2009 he published “Freed From The Brambles,” a book of inspirational poems, that spurred his inner creativity in expression of poetry. This brought about a renewal of his visual expression. Upon retirement in 2012, a renewed vigor for painting and visual medium emerged. His restored creativity began with watercolors, spurring on the joy of the freedom the medium brought. With a passion, Helms returned to oils.

Helms has donated artwork to many community projects. These include murals for the United Way, Temple Memorial Rehabilitation for Children, and the Salvation Army. He has also worked with at-risk children at the local Juvenile Detention Center. He is a member of Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America, Four States Art Club and works with the Women for the Arts’ annual event, “Party with Picassos.”

Artist Statement

I paint for the enjoyment and excitement of using what I believe is God's gift by taking a blank canvas or sheet of paper and allowing strokes, images, and colors to come together. The patterns, shapes, lights and darks turn out to be somewhat realistic with impressionistic tendencies depending upon the subject, mood, idea or inspiration at the moment. I don't force myself to adhere to a specific subject or style. I work in various mediums, sizes using various subjects, yet my inner adaptation of the medium seems to always emerge with some familiarity of myself. I have been fortunate to be honored with many awards throughout the years. My paintings are in homes across the United States from Arkansas, Texas, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Louisiana, Michigan and Washington State.

This exhibit of landscapes, plants and flowers titled “The Third Day” is based on Genesis 1: 12-13 …”The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a third day.”

This Exhibit is made possible by contributions from TRAHC Members.
