Wizards of Pop: Reinhart & Sabuda

Wizards of Pop: Sabuda & Reinhart

Opening on March 26 and will be displayed at the Regional Arts Center through May 4, 2013. The exhibit is on loan from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature  or NCCIL (pronounced ‘nickel’ ).

Children’s book creators Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart are renowned for the extraordinary range and depth of their talents and paper engineering skills. These artists have created many best selling books together as well as separately and have stretched the realms of their readers’ imagination.

Born in Pinckney, Michigan, Sabuda discovered he was an artist the moment he first held a crayon. He spent hours, days and weeks drawing, painting, cutting and gluing. His work broadened when he folded together many pieces of paper, stapled them down the middle, and made a book. His adventures in book making took an exciting turn when he encountered pop-up books in the waiting room of a dentist. From that time, his mother collected used manila folders for him, the perfect paper for making pop-ups. His talent led him to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he studied and eventually taught art.

In a similar way, art has always been a tremendous part of Reinhart’s life. Drawing pictures and making crafts were his favorite childhood activities. He drew whenever he could, often filling his school notebooks with more drawings than notes! After graduating from Clemson with a degree in biology, Reinhart knew that medicine was not his calling. He says that he did not realize that he could make a living as a children’s book illustrator or that such “cool” fields as paper engineering existed.  With his portfolio from art classes at Clemson in hand, Reinhart moved to Brooklyn and enrolled at Pratt Institute as an industrial design major. He expected to become a toy designer, stemming from his passion for Star Wars figures and Hasbro Transformers, in particular. A stint as Robert Sabuda’s assistant convinced Reinhart to stay in the pop-up world. After all, he says, pop-ups are a lot like paper Transformers, without so many robots.

Sabuda’s first NCCIL exhibition Travels in Time and Space continues traveling to venues around the country.

Books represented in the newest NCCIL exhibition will include pop-up wonders and process pieces from The Encyclopedia Prehistorica book series: Dinosaurs, Mega Beasts and Sharks and other Sea Monsters, the Encyclopedia Mythologica series: Fairies and Magical Creatures, Peter Pan, Adventure of Alice in Wonderland, Star Wars, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book. Another element to this exhibition are the oversized mechanical pop-ups coming from Japan. There is something for everyone, young and old!

Today, Sabuda and Reinhart both live and work together in New York City, where they create their books.
