Resemblance: Figure and Portrait Paintings by Runcie Tatnall

TRAHC presents... Resemblance: Figure and Portrait Paintings by Runcie Tatnall
March 29 - May 3, 2014
Regional Arts Center

Biography
Originally from the Newark, Delaware area, Tatnall practiced painting and drawing from an early age. After receiving a degree in illustration from the University of Delaware in 1995, Tatnall lived in Washington, D.C. working as an exhibiting artist, portrait painter, and caricature artist. In 1999, Tatnall moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he continued to work as an exhibiting artist, as well as a muralist, and teacher. Tatnall received an MFA degree in painting from the University of Miami in 2009.
Tatnall has been exhibiting nationally since 1995 in cities including Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C and Houston. His portraits, landscapes, and still life’s are part of collections throughout the United States.
Currently, the artist lives in East Texas, and is a professor of art at Stephen F. Austin State University.
Portrait and figure paintings (including dogs,) have long been the dominant subject matter in Tatnall’s work.  His recent body of 26 large boxing paintings was completed in 2009.
While exhibiting large figurative paintings for many years, Tatnall has been working simultaneously on smaller, non-representational pictures that allow him to experiment with materials and technique to achieve a greater freedom and spontaneity. The non-representational paintings constitute a relatively new direction in his work, but one that runs parallel to, and informs, the development of his representational work.

Artist’s Statement
Tatnall seeks to honestly depict the experience and personality of his subjects, simultaneously with his experience as an artist. Tatnall uses layers of paint vigorously applied with minimal manipulation to convey the immediacy of life, and a greater realism. Taking deliberate risks with illusionistic representation, Tatnall incorporates impulsive paint application, “unfinished” areas, and distortion of the figure.
Stylistically, Tatnall’s pictures are reminiscent of artists who impart a sense of reality beyond the surface in their pictures, such as Robert Henri and the Ashcan School, George Bellows, John Singer Sargent, and Lucien Freud. More recently, his paintings have become increasingly influenced by the expressionism of painters such as Cy Twombly, Willem De Kooning, and Richard Diebenkorn.
The characters that inhabit Tatnall’s paintings are performers: from boxers to bulldogs. Tatnall’s pictures invite the viewer by engaging them not so much in the concept or process behind the painting’s creation, but in the enjoyment of the performance.
