STEM is a renewed effort to engage students from elementary through graduate school in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In 2009, TRAHC African American Committee created and sponsored their second original exhibit , Innovative Minds: African American Inventors and Inventions. Dating back to 1700, the research showed that African Americans invented or improved many agricultural , household, industrial, early technology and commercial items.

This exhibit, 20th Century African American in STEM is a look at modern day contributors to the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Their educational paths lead to careers in space exploration, automotive design, software development, special effects for movies, entertainment products and revolutionary medical devices.

The modern day STEM contributors come from a range of income and educational backgrounds. They all had a few things in common: the thirst for knowledge in their areas of interest.

Family members or people at schools, churches, and community centers supported their interests and sought ways to help them build their skills. The contributors were persistent in their quests to reach achieve their goals. They met and overcame many barriers and obstacles.

During the second and third phases of their careers, several contributors founded their own companies and continued to innovate in their fields of study. In many ways, they have supported STEM programs and activities geared toward minority students.

NASA has a long history of reaching out to the African American community through partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as well as sponsoring summer programs and mentoring activities geared toward minority students.

This exhibit will reveal new and exciting information about African American's multiple roles and significant contributions in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
